Rees Architects at the 2024 Shoreditch Design Festival: Celebrating Sustainability in Design
For the 2024 Shoreditch Design Festival, we participated in the RE-CREATE II Exhibition with Solid Floor, celebrating the concept of reuse. The exhibition highlighted the potential of repurposing materials into new contexts, creatively exploring opportunities to work with recycled elements.
Reclaimed Layers was our contribution to this exciting showcase.
RECLAIMED LAYERS
Designed by Rees Architects | Made with Honed Homes
Our timber cladding prototype, made from repurposed high-quality timber remnants from Solid Floor prevents valuable materials from going to waste. By reusing these discarded yet premium timbers, the project demonstrates how salvaged materials can still produce high-quality results, conserving resources and offering fresh creative opportunities while making a positive environmental impact.
The journey from model making to showcasing our cladding prototype at the exhibition. Where we started with a detailed model, we then refined the concept into a fully realised build, demonstrating both craftsmanship and innovation. The final prototype embodied the potential of using repurposed materials, capturing the essence of sustainability and forward-thinking design.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Rees Architects, sustainability is not just a goal, it’s integral to the way we approach every project. We continuously seek materials that combine premium quality with environmental responsibility. This commitment ensures that our designs are not only aesthetically beautiful, but also timeless, durable, and environmentally friendly. Our timber cladding prototype, made from high-quality remnants provided by Solid Floor, exemplifies how premium materials can be given a second life without losing any of their value.
The Harmony of Quality and Recycling
One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the balance of high-end design with recycled materials. Many people believe using repurposed materials means sacrificing quality, but this exhibition proves otherwise. In fact, working with recycled timber enhances the character and uniqueness of the design, creating an architectural piece that tells a story—one of conservation and creativity. The timber cladding we created is a perfect example of this harmony.
Environmental Impact of Repurposing
Repurposing materials, especially premium ones like timber, helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimise the environmental footprint of construction projects. Instead of discarding valuable remnants, we’re giving them new life, showing that sustainable practices can inspire fresh creative opportunities while positively impacting the environment.
The Future of Sustainable High-End Design
The RE-CREATE II Exhibition shows a glimpse of the future, where premium quality and sustainability shape high-end architecture. Rees Architects, in collaboration with Solid Floor and Honed Homes, explored how salvaged materials can deliver superior designs that are both innovative and environmentally conscious.
As the demand for sustainable design grows, Rees Architects remains dedicated to creating spaces that are as responsible as they are inspiring.
