Embracing Sustainability, Biophilic Principles, and Warm Minimalism in Modern Architecture
At Rees Architects, we believe that truly transformative architecture goes beyond aesthetic appeal—it should also nurture well-being and respect the environment. Three of the most influential themes shaping contemporary design today are Sustainability & Natural Materials, Biophilic & Nature-Inspired Design, and Minimalism, with a warm twist.
Let’s explore how these trends can elevate residential spaces and how we’ve integrated them into some of our favourite projects.
Sustainability & Natural Materials
Environmental responsibility has never been more critical. Homeowners and architects are now more mindful of how material choices and construction techniques affect the planet. Opting for natural, sustainable materials creates homes that are healthy for both their inhabitants and the environment.
What does this look like?
Eco-Friendly Materials: Locally sourced timber, recycled bricks, and responsibly harvested components reduce carbon footprints. One innovative material we recommend is foam glass gravel by Glapor, which is not only made from 100% recycled glass, but also offers excellent insulation and drainage properties for eco-conscious construction.
Breathable Finishes: Lime plaster, natural paints, and untreated woods enhance air quality and maintain a healthy indoor atmosphere. Another excellent choice is wood fibre insulation boards, such as MultiTherm 140, which provides insulation while maintaining breathability and sustainability.
Energy Efficiency: Designing thermal mass into a home, solar panels, double- or triple-glazed windows, and well-insulated walls keep energy consumption low.
How we’ve brought this to life…
Cacti Vista House highlights our commitment to sustainability. This thoughtful renovation integrates FSC-certified hardwoods and energy-efficient glazing while ensuring a seamless connection to its lush surroundings. These choices reflect our ethos of longevity and ecological integrity.
In our Wanstead Village project, we used a palette of natural materials to complement the historic charm of this East London home. Reclaimed bricks and breathable finishes were chosen to balance environmental responsibility with timeless design.

Biophilic & Nature-Inspired Design
Biophilic design reconnects people with nature, improving mental and physical well-being. It’s a philosophy that seamlessly blends the indoors with the outdoors, bringing the tranquility of natural elements into daily living.
Key Elements
Natural Light: Expansive windows and skylights flood interiors with daylight.
Indoor Greenery: Living walls, potted plants, and garden views create an ongoing connection to nature. Certain indoor plants, such as peace lilies, spider plants, and snake plants, also offer health benefits by naturally purifying the air and reducing toxins, creating a healthier living environment.
Earthy Tones & Textures: Soft greens, warm woods, and stone finishes evoke calm and balance.
Our Approach to Biophilia
At Cacti Vista House, the expansive, custom-designed windows allow natural light to flood the interiors while framing views of the verdant greenery outside. This thoughtful integration of light and landscape fosters a serene, nature-inspired atmosphere that enhances well-being.
Our Wanstead Village project exemplifies how greenery can be intricately woven into the fabric of a home. Courtyards and cleverly designed outdoor spaces were incorporated to maintain a continuous connection to nature, creating an intimate yet expansive feel.
In Grove Retreat, biophilic design principles shaped the project from the ground up. The lush private garden was central to the design, while soft, natural tones and materials inside echoed the tranquility of the outdoors, demonstrating how urban living can be enriched by nature.

Warm Minimalism
Minimalist design doesn’t have to be stark. Warm minimalism strikes a balance between simplicity and comfort, offering streamlined spaces that still feel welcoming and personal.
Defining Warm Minimalism
Soft Neutrals: Warm grays, beiges, and gentle earth tones create a soothing atmosphere. Finishes such as Clayworks clay plasters add texture and depth while maintaining breathability and sustainability. Additionally, Bauwerk limewash paints provide a natural matte finish that enhances the softness of neutral palettes while contributing to a healthier indoor environment.
Layered Textures: Natural materials such as linen, wool, or lightly finished wood bring depth to minimalist interiors. When designed in correctly, these materials can age gracefully, developing a patina or character that enhances their beauty over time.
Understated Details: Functional design with carefully chosen accent pieces adds character without excess.
Examples in Our Work
In our East Dulwich project, we paired Victorian elegance with modern simplicity. Clean lines and open spaces were softened with natural wood finishes, warm lighting, and thoughtful details, resulting in an interior that feels both modern and inviting.
The Barnsbury Townhouse takes this ethos a step further. With a focus on clean architectural forms and bespoke joinery, we achieved a harmonious blend of minimalism and charm. Each room is calm yet characterful, reflecting the homeowner's personality.
